A monolithic showcase city, Beijing can give a distorted view of China to foreign visitors. Its high-rise modern architecture and vast international hotels are connected by an intricate system of broad boulevards and rectangular ring roads around the city. Beyond the modernity, Beijing offers traditional lane houses from the 13th and 14th centuries (hutongs),although these are fast disappearing, parks, architectural and cultural treasures and exquisite temples in a city that is remarkably flat (there are only three hills within the city limits). Highlights include the Bird’s Nest Stadium, Tiananmen Square and the 15th century Forbidden City (a UNESCO World Heritage site), which was the seat of government and empire for almost 500 years.
